Is Self love enough?
It's Mental Health Awareness Week, and the theme this year is looking at body image. According to figures released by the Mental Health Foundation, 1 in 5 adults have felt shame and worry because of their body image in the last year. Over 1/3 have struggled with anxiety or depression related to body image concerns. You can read their full report here.
In our image obsessed society it is so easy to feel we are not good enough and don't measure up to the ideals we see portrayed all around us. The challenge is to love ourselves anyway, in spite of the flaws and limitations we are so aware of in ourselves. This is very much the theme of the lead song from the recent hit movie 'The Greatest Showman' - the song 'This is me.' which sings out the message 'I am broken, I am bruised, I am who I'm meant to be - this is me!'
But is self love enough? And might it have a sting in the tale - a risk in our society so focused on acceptance? And what does the Bible say? Check out this recent talk from Kate Middleton - part of a series at Zeo Church looking at the themes of songs from The Greatest Showman - exploring this:
